Where to stay in Sea Point

Sea Point is the most lively and most affordable neighbourhood on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, and one of the smartest places to base a trip. Its palm-lined promenade runs for kilometres along the ocean, the streets are packed with restaurants, cafes and shops, and you can walk almost everywhere. If you want real Cape Town energy and excellent value, here is why to stay in Sea Point.

Why stay in Sea Point

Sea Point gives you more for your money than anywhere else on the coast. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan suburb where people actually live, which means great everyday restaurants, delis, coffee shops, grocers and gyms all within walking distance. The famous promenade is the heart of it: a wide, paved ocean-front walkway, perfect for morning runs, sunset strolls and watching the waves, with grassy lawns, public art and play areas along the way.

It is also superbly located, minutes from the V&A Waterfront and the city centre in one direction, and Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay in the other. You get the best of both: a real neighbourhood to stay in, and the beaches and sights a short hop away.

The Sea Point Promenade and pavilion

The promenade is Sea Point's signature. It stretches from Mouille Point past the lighthouse all the way along the sea, and it is busy from dawn to dark with walkers, runners, cyclists and families. The Sea Point Pavilion, a historic outdoor swimming complex with a large saltwater pool right on the ocean, is a local institution and a great spot for a proper swim, since the sea itself is cold.

Where to eat and drink

Sea Point has one of the most diverse food scenes in Cape Town: Mediterranean, Asian, Italian, seafood, bakeries, ice-cream parlours and some of the best casual dining in the city, much of it along Main Road and Regent Road. It is the kind of place where you can eat somewhere different every night without driving anywhere.

Who Sea Point suits

Stay in Sea Point if you want value, walkability and a genuine neighbourhood feel, especially for longer stays. It suits couples, families, solo travellers and anyone who likes to be among the action and on foot. If you want to wake up directly on a beach, Camps Bay or Clifton are a few minutes south. For quiet luxury with views, look at neighbouring Bantry Bay and Fresnaye.
